Site Migration Without Losing Traffic: The Full Process

Migrations cause more catastrophic traffic loss than any other SEO event. Here is the sequence that prevents it.

Before you touch anything

Benchmark everything. Full crawl of the current site, complete ranking snapshot, traffic by landing page, and a full backlink export. You cannot detect what broke if you do not know what worked.

Build the redirect map

Every old URL maps to the closest equivalent new URL. Not the homepage. Mapping everything to the homepage is the single most common migration failure and it destroys the accumulated authority of every redirected page.

Pay particular attention to your most-linked pages. Those carry the most authority and cause the most damage if mishandled.

Launch and monitor

Deploy redirects simultaneously with the new site, never after. Submit the new sitemap immediately. Monitor Search Console coverage daily for the first two weeks, then weekly for two months.

Expect a temporary dip of 10 to 20 percent for a few weeks even on a well-executed migration. Recovery within six to eight weeks is normal. No recovery by week eight means something is wrong.

Key takeaways

  • Benchmark comprehensively before any change
  • Map every URL individually; never redirect en masse to the homepage
  • Deploy redirects simultaneously with launch, not afterwards
  • A 10-20% temporary dip is normal; no recovery by week eight is not
