New domains with no existing profile. Sites recovering from a manual action. Any situation where the acquisition pattern would look inconsistent with the site's visible profile and activity.
Established sites with existing authority. Genuine PR campaigns producing legitimate coverage. Product launches. In these cases the spike has a visible cause, which is exactly what makes it plausible.
