Keyword Research: A Practical Method That Works

How to find keywords worth targeting rather than keywords with impressive search volume.

Start with the money, not the volume

List what you actually sell and what someone types when they are ready to buy it. These terms usually have low volume and high value. They are also where competitors concentrate, which is why most guides tell you to start with informational content instead.

Rank these by revenue potential, not by search volume. A term with 90 monthly searches that converts at 8% is worth more than one with 9,000 searches that converts at 0.1%.

Then map the journey backwards

For each commercial term, work backwards through the questions someone asks before reaching it. Those questions become your supporting content, and they link forward to the commercial page.

This produces a topic cluster naturally rather than as an afterthought.

Assess difficulty honestly

Look at who actually ranks in the top five. If they are all sites with ten times your authority, that term is a twelve-month project, not a quick win. Difficulty scores from tools are a rough proxy; examining the actual SERP is better.

Key takeaways

  • Rank keywords by revenue potential, not search volume
  • Work backwards from commercial terms to build clusters
  • Examine the actual SERP rather than trusting difficulty scores
  • Low-volume high-intent terms are usually the best starting point
