hreflang and International SEO Done Right

Multi-country sites break in predictable ways. Here is how to avoid each one.

What hreflang does

It tells search engines which language and regional version of a page to show which users. It does not affect ranking directly; it affects which version ranks for whom. Incorrect implementation means the wrong version shows or none do.

The rules that get broken

Every hreflang set must be reciprocal: if A points to B, B must point back to A. Every set must include a self-referencing tag. Use correct ISO codes. Include an x-default for unmatched users. Point to canonical, indexable URLs only.

Structure decisions

Country-code domains give the strongest geographic signal but split authority. Subdirectories consolidate authority and are usually right for most businesses. Subdomains sit awkwardly between the two. Choose once and commit, because changing later is a full migration.

Key takeaways

  • hreflang controls which version ranks for whom, not whether it ranks
  • Every set must be reciprocal and self-referencing
  • Include an x-default for unmatched users
  • Subdirectories consolidate authority best for most businesses
