Branded searches come from people who already know you, generated by advertising, word of mouth, PR, or previous purchase. Non-branded searches come from people discovering you through a need. Only the second represents SEO acquiring new demand.
In Search Console, filter queries containing your brand name and common misspellings. Report the two streams separately, always. Most agencies do not, because combined numbers look better.
Rising branded traffic means your brand-building is working. Rising non-branded means your SEO is working. Rising branded with flat non-branded means you are paying an SEO agency for results another channel produced.
